Hey, Alex Soikans here..

Hey, Alex Soikans here, welcome to my AOL blog. Let me start off by saying that just because I' about to join Tech Support and write my own blog doesn't make me a geek! OK, hands up, I'm a multimedia graduate, I finished my course back in May and I enjoy working with computers.

Hi, I'm Alex

Which is how I came to join AOL Broadband. I'd first heard about the company from a few guys on my course who were all working for AOL part time whilst studying at college. They'd just started training for the Tech Support department and were racking up lots of practical experience. I was doing nights in a bar at the time and was pretty surprised to learn I could've been working part time in an area I was studying for.

I joined AOL Broadband in July as a temporary communications co-ordinator, which suited my qualification. Working within an IT environment has really helped me enhance my practical skills and built on the training I had at college. It's a really good way of developing my skills, as I'll often come across situations that need me to draw on all my experience in solving. And of course I get a real kick out of it! The team here is really supportive and you can always rely on backup when you need it.

That's what I've found most valuable about working at AOL Broadband, you're given loads of support and not thrown straight in at the deep end. I've spent a few weeks working with the Communications team and when the opportunity came up to get a full time position in the Tech Support Team I jumped at the chance.

The highly active social scene is another plus, The basketball club, one of many, being of particular interest to me.

My training and induction starts next week and I'm really looking forward to getting stuck in. It's a good way of keeping my product knowledge up to date and I really feel that I'm building a career for my future.

First Day on the job

Posted on 1st October 2007 by Alex Soikans

Well, I survived my first day on the job........
so what was it like?

I was met in reception by Amanda our trainer, who brought me to the room where we will be based for the next 2 weeks. I met all the other newbies, it was a little nerve wrecking but Amanda put us all at ease and to break the ice we got time to chat amongst ourselves and got tea & muffins!

Our first day was jam packed, and we got to learn about what AOL is all about. The place is huge with lot of people milling around but by the end of my first day at least I knew my way to the really important places like the loo and the canteen! It's hard being the new person in any job, but because there is a whole team of you together you start to feel like you're part of the place straight away.

Sean from HR gave us a presentation about all the great benefits you get from working here. They include a PerfectGift card that has been credited with €250 and works like a credit card so you can spend it on what you want. We also got a list of a local shops who give discounts to employees some up to 20%........bring on payday!

There seems to be a lot of out of work things going on, the Sports & Social club have organised a mini basketball tournament in a few weeks so a few of us got together last night and had a bit of a game and what you could loosely call training. It was a good laugh anyway and I got to meet a few more people.

So one week down, and I can honestly say it was enjoyable...
I think I will really fit in here.
