AOL Waterford has joined forces with the Irish Wildlife Trust (IWT) in a bid to clean up St. John’s riverbank.
AOL Waterford, which employs 750 people, runs a volunteer scheme whereby employees are invited to donate one working day to a registered charity of their choice.
And on 27th April 22 AOL employees, armed with equipment provided by the County Council, were on hand to clean up St. John’s river, which began at Tesco Poleberry.
“Our volunteering scheme is very popular with employees and charities alike,” said Elaine Connolly, Communications Manager, AOL. “We have worked with charities such as the Cheshire Homes and St. Martins School for Special Needs Children in the past and on this occasion, we have decided to assist the Irish Wildlife Trust with the riverbank clean up.”
Marie Power of the Irish Wlidlife Trust said; “The IWT Waterford are delighted to work with AOL volunteers on this project. Litter on riverbanks ends up in the water sooner or later and poses a threat to fish, otters, birds and other wildlife. The toxins which leach from discarded materials negatively impact on water quality and as St. John’s Pill is central to Waterford’s cityscape and part of it’s history, it is really worth looking after.” |
